Parents’ College Planning Timelines

Ninth-Grade Timeline

  • If you haven’t started a college savings account, do so as soon as possible. You can encourage your student to do the same.
  • Discuss with your student the need to take challenging courses to prepare for life after high school, but make sure the classes aren’t beyond his or her ability.
  • Talk with your student regularly to make sure things are going well in school. If not, discuss what changes need to be made.
  • Sign up for the Your KHEAA College Connection newsletter.
  • Discuss the connection between classes taken and possible careers, and have your student take a test or survey that will give both of you an idea of your student’s abilities and interests.
  • Discuss with your student the reasons for going to college.
  • Talk with your student’s school counselor about standardized tests your student may need to take in the upcoming years.
  • Discuss with your student and counselor the classes your student needs to take in 10th grade to meet his or her education goals.
  • Talk with your student to make sure he or she is getting the most out of academic and career exploration activities. If not, discuss what changes need to be made.
  • Work with your student on time management skills.
  • Help your student learn how to use library and authoritative Internet sources to build research skills.
  • Encourage participation in summer activities to develop teamwork, leadership and commitment skills.
  • Sometime in the summer, students should sign into their MyKheaa accounts to make sure their name, address, Social Security number and freshman GPA are correct and to find out how much KEES money they earned. If any information is wrong, they should contact their school counselor.
