Repaying Your Loans

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program

If you have a Federal Direct or Stafford Loan, you may be eligible for the Teacher Forgiveness Program. To qualify, you must have received your first loan after September 30, 1998. You may be eligible to have up to $5,000 forgiven after teaching five consecutive, complete school years in a low-income school. If you teach secondary math or science or special education at any level, you may be eligible for up to $17,500 in forgiveness after teaching for five consecutive, complete school years in a low-income school.

If your loan is guaranteed by KHEAA, you may submit your completed Federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Form directly to KHEAA for review. KHEAA will determine your eligibility for loan forgiveness within 45 days of receipt of the application.

  • If you are approved for loan forgiveness, KHEAA will notify you and send a payment to your loan holder for the amount for which you qualify.
  • If you don’t qualify, KHEAA will explain why.

If you have questions about the teacher loan forgiveness application process, please call KHEAA customer assistance at 800.928.8926.

For more information, visit the U.S. Department of Education.

If you haven’t taught for five years yet, you may qualify for a forbearance. If your loan balance plus five years of interest will be less than the amount of the expected forgiveness, complete the forbearance form and return it to your loan holder.
